Clever Public Library Holds Open House

Clever Public Library will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 23. Located in the renovated office of the former Clever Fire Department, the Library is at The City of Clever and the Christian County Library are cooperating to bring improved library services to Clever area residents.

A Missouri State Library approved grant from the U. S. Institute of Museum and Library Services will help the library create a portable laptop computer lab.

Three staff members recently completed a Gates Foundation-sponsored four day workshop on planning and presenting public training on library resources. The workshop took place during Missouri State Library's annual Summer Institute.

The laptop grant will cover $23,000 toward buying twenty student computers, a Wi-Fi router, an instructor computer and stand, computer storage cart, projector, ceiling-mounted screen, and software. The library will contribute $11,000. Space constrains prohibits using an area permanently for a lab. The portable lab will allow the library meeting room to serve dual purposes.

The laptop grant was planned and written by Rhonda Riley, Joe Defazio and Taneesa Hall who also attended the Gates Foundation "Staying Connected" training.

Public programs are planned on basic computer and internet use; finding and requesting library materials on-line; and using library databases and websites. Public input will be sought on additional programs to offer, such as health, legal, genealogical, government, employment, or parenting resources. The lab will also be used for staff training.

Equipment has been ordered and programs are being planned. Program schedules will be announced later.

Clever Public Library

It’s not an actual branch of the Christian County Library, but Clever area residents will soon have improved library services. Using funds from a bequest from the Virgil Lee and Mildred Sims estate, the city of Clever has signed a contract with the Christian County Library.

In addition to visiting the library in Ozark, Western Christian County residents currently have a pick-up and return service available at Clever City Hall; monthly van deliver service at Boaz community, Clever Senior Housing and Billings community stops; and websites and subscription databases available on-line at any time.

The city will provide space, furniture, equipment, utilities, insurance, internet access, maintenance and supplies. Volunteers may also perform services not related to checking library materials in and out. The library will provide a trained staff member, the automation system to allow materials to be checked in and out, a book return, cataloged library materials and delivery services between the library and Clever.

The committee to handle the bequest have chosen the name Clever City Library for the cooperative project. It will be operated in the office of the former Clever Fire Department building and an adjacent bathroom and storage closet at 210 Clarke in Clever. Initial plans are to open the library 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturdays. If legal holidays occur during Clever City Library’s regular schedule, they will follow the Christian County Library‘s closing schedule. An beginning date will be announced when hiring and training of the library staff member and substitute, connection of high-speed internet, preparation of a beginning collection and converting the space for library use are all anticipated to be completed.

During a tour of new libraries during a “Space Planning” workshop at the American Library Association Conference in June 2007, we toured the Montgomery County Library in Rockville, Maryland. http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/apps/libraries/branchinfo/ro.asp

Among many interesting features were many library, learning and book quotations engraved on a second floor balcony surrounding the circulation desk and entry. They were so varied and appropriate that I thought others would be interested in them. I have added two mentioned in other ALA meetings.

Christian County Library's Strategic Plan

The Christian County Library Board of Trustees, at their April 27, 2007 meeting, approved the basic outline of the Christian County Library's Strategic Plan.

The preliminary plan includes the library's Mission, Values, Goals, Space Needs analysis, and Technology Plan.

As approved, the Mission Statement states: The Christian County Library serves Christian County residents' informational, cultural, educational and recreational needs. Library-provided facilities, materials, personnel and services enable citizens to access the county's preserved past; enjoy an enhanced life today; and explore opportunities to improve their future.

The library's values include keeping library and its services accessible, accountable, locally responsive, safe and legal, customer focused and community oriented.

Goals are outlined for the collection, staff and facilities.
